Although not all anxiety fits in a predetermined category here are some questions that can help you specify if you have an anxiety problem and more specifically what type.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Do you feel that you have excessive, unrealistic worry that has lasted six months or more? Are your worries focused on issues such as health, money, or career? Do you have physical symptoms such as trembling, muscular aches, insomnia, abdominal upsets, dizziness, and irritability? Are your symptoms severe enough to impair work, social and family life?
Phobias and Fears Do you have an intensive fear of a specific object or situation (such as spiders, dogs, or heights). Do you or others feel that the level of fear is usually inappropriate to the situation or trigger? Do you avoid the feared object and common, everyday situations?
Social Anxiety Do you have an extreme anxiety about being judged by others or behaving in a way that might cause embarrassment or ridicule. Do you find yourself avoiding situations and people so not to feel the anxiety? Do you experience physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, faintness, blushing, and profuse sweating?
Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder Do you suffer from an onslaught of intense fear that seems to come from nowhere with an intensity that feels unmanageable and unstoppable? Do you have physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, sweating, shortness of breath, tingling, trembling, and nausea?
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Do you feel your are plagued by persistent, recurring thoughts (obsessions) that reflect exaggerated anxieties or fears? Do you feel you excessively worry about being contaminated or fear of behaving improperly or acting violently? Do you need to perform a ritual or routine (compulsions), such as washing hands, repeating phrases, or hoarding, to relieve the anxiety caused by the obsession?
Post Traumatic Sress Disorder (PTSD)
Have you been exposed to a traumatic event such as a sexual or physical assault, witnessing a death, the unexpected death of a loved one, or natural disaster? Do you have flashbacks or nightmares that make you feel as if you were reliving the event? Do you try and avoid places, people or thoughts that might remind you of th event? Do you feel emotional numb or detached from others? Do you have difficulty sleeping, irritability, or poor concentration?
Do you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep all night? Do you feel that your lack of sleep is diminishing your quality of life or causing health problems?
When there are no existing health problems contributing to insomnia, then therapy may provide a drug-free solution to the lack of sleep. Visualization techniques, clinical hypnosis, stress reduction and guided imagery are highly effective tools for treating insomnia.
